As an interesting corollary, listen to The Marketplace of Ideas' discussion with Jesse Thorn and Adam Lisagor of Put This On. Adam is asked about producing short-form videos for the web:
I know that the short form is relatively new. The internet itself is relatively new. I would say as early as reasonably streaming video has been around, there's been demand for your five- to ten-minute video. Technologically speaking, that all converged with the available tools: computers being fast enough to edit video, cameras being cheap enough to shoot something and have it not look like complete garbage with tracking lines going through it. That all converged together about the time I was getting out of college.
